  • What materials can be engraved and cut?

    Materials that can be engraved and cut include wood, acrylic, some plastics, various foams (EVA, Depron(r), polystyrene), cork, and vegetable tanned leather. Materials such as paper and denim can also be cut and marked at very low power creating a nice mark with no real depth. Materials that can be engraved, but not cut include glass, ceramics, stone, and metals.

  • Metal Marking and Engraving

    Bare metal can be engraved with very high detail and various affects depending on the type on metal. Metal that is anodized, painted, or powder coated can be engraved to remove the coating and expose the bare metal. Marking compounds can be used to provide a permanent highly-durable black or dark grey mark on the surface without actually engraving the metal. Pearl and copper colors are also available for certain metals. Engraving of small cylindrical items such as rings is also available.

  • What materials are not suitable for laser engraving?

    Chromium tanned leather can produce potentially toxic gasses during processing, and cannot be engraved. Likewise, some plastics such as PVC, PVB, PTFE, ABS, and any other materials containing Halogens cannot be engraved due to safety issues. Polycarbonate tends to discolor and burn easily, therefore does not engrave well. Glass and crystal containing lead has poor contrast and inconsistent engraving, so results may vary. Thin glass may fracture easily during engraving, so items such as light-weight double wall glasses may crack or chip.
